chavez_DSC001Busy Week Begins With Sweep of Tigers

Game One     Game Two

(3/11/08 - Softball) IRVINE - With three game dates over the next five days, the Concordia softball team wanted to get this six-game stretch off to a solid start. Put a check in that box. The NAIA's #25-ranked Eagles posted a pair of mercy rule victories over visiting Occidental, 9-1 and 8-0, Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play.

The Eagles tallied two runs in four of their six at-bats in game one, wasting no time by scoring four times over the first two innings. Doubles by Caitlyn Senkbeil and Shannon Walton set the table in the 1st inning, the latter driving in the second run of the inning. The two-run 2nd inning all came with two outs as Samantha Perez and Senkbeil delivered singles to plate Ashley Fama and Ashley Alvarez.

Those runs were more than enough for junior RHP Sarah Frudakis, who allowed a single run on five hits over five innings of work. After allowing a single and double to start the 6th inning, head coach Frank Rizzo called on Kory Briggs to close the door on the Tigers. Briggs induced three-straight groundouts to keep the run total to just one.

The opener came to an end as the Eagles tallied twice more in the 6th inning. After MIchelle Carter reached on an error, Alicia Leto singled up the middle. The singles kept on coming as Isabel Chavez completed a three-hit outing with a RBI-single, then Fama added a final run-scoring hit.

As solid as the team played in the first game, they kept up the pressure and were virtually mistake-free in the second game. Rachel Reekstin was lights out in the circle, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out five.

The Concordia offense did the most of its damage in the 3rd inning as the Eagles pushed five runs across. Shannon Walton drove in a pair of runs with a bases loaded single, then Chavez brought two more across with a base hit.

Chavez finished the day 4-for-7 with three RBI. Senkbeil had three doubles over the two games while Walton had a pair of her own. The Eagles tallied 22 hits over the two games as all but one starter had at least one hit in the opener.

Concordia (22-7) is back at it in less than 24 hours, hosting NAIA Region II foe Dominican with two games starting at 1:30 p.m.
