Two-Out Rally Helps Eagles Complete Sweep
Game One Game Two
(2/14/08 - Softball) IRVINE - Sophomore OF Shannon Walton singled in the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning to help #25-ranked Concordia earn a come-from-behind 4-3 win after winning 2-0 in game one to complete a sweep of visiting Belhaven, Thursday afternoon in non-conference play.
The Eagles erased deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 in the second game thanks to two run-scoring hits by freshman 2B Isabel Chavez. The Eagle newcomer lofted a hit over shortstop in the 4th inning to plate Alicia Leto and Lauren Hastings, then blooped a single beyond second base with the infield drawn in allowing Hastings to score again.
Tied 3-3 heading into the final at-bat of the game, the Blazers quickly got the first two outs of the inning to push the Eagles up against the possibility of the international tiebreaker. Caitlyn Senkbeil kept the inning alive with a single through the left side, then freshman C Carly Smith followed suit with an identical hit between third and short.
Walton stepped to the plate with runners on first and second after going 0-for-3 against starter Mallory Meadows. However, relief pitcher Salina Cervantes (0-1) provided just the right change of tempo as Walton roped a third-straight single to left and Senkbeil beat the throw to the plate to complete the comeback.
The pitching trio of Sarah Frudakis (2-0), Kory Briggs and Rachel Reekstin combined to blank the Blazers in the opening game of the doubleheader. Frudakis scattered just four hits and struck out six, but ran into trouble with one out in the 6th as the Blazers loaded the bases.
Briggs got the call and bailed the Eagles out of trouble, throwing just six pitches to record a pair of strikeouts. She then recorded the first two outs of the 7th inning before issuing a walk to leadoff hitter Britney Webb. Head coach Frank Rizzo decided to take no chances and brought in his staff ace to nail down the victory. Despite hitting Jessica Eggold with her second pitch, Reekstin struck out JorD'an Orr to get the final out.
Reekstin earned a win and a save on the day, allowing a run on three hits while striking five in 4.2 innings of work. Bambi Finlay hit a sacrifice fly while Ashley Alvarez converted a perfect squeeze bunt to give the Eagles their two runs in the third inning of game one.
Concordia (8-2) looks to keep its 7-game winning streak alive on Friday, February 15 with a pair of non-conference games at Cal State Dominguez Hills starting at 1:00 p.m. Live stats will be available via the CSUDH website. Click here to access the webcast.
