(10/25/07 - Women's Soccer) IRVINE - A giveaway in the Concordia backline gave visiting Point Loma Nazarene the only goal of the game as the Sea Lions earned a 1-0 win over the Eagles, Thursday afternoon in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
Despite holding a 14-6 shot advantage for the game, the Eagles were continually thwarted by the Sea Lion backline and goalkeeper Grace Lee, who finished the game with three saves. Lee can also credit the crossbar with possibly the most important stop of the game.
Concordia earned its first corner kick of the game and put a considerable amount of pressure on the Point Loma net. Natalie Tankersley fired a shot that was initially blocked, but floated up in the air toward the back post. Brianne Wahrenbrock rose for the header, but her attempt hit the piping across the top of the goal and the Sea Lions were able to clear.
With that chance thwarted 25 minutes into the game, the Sea Lions (11-4-1, 5-3-1 GSAC) grabbed the game-winner just three minutes later. The ball was played into the Concordia backline, where Caitlin Schneider went to collect. She pushed toward the middle of the field, but was dispossessed by Kari Moore at the top of the box. Moore raced toward goal and beat Suzanne Torres to the left post at 28:32.
Despite long spells of possession and a matching 7-3 shot advantage in the second half, the equalizing goal never came for the Eagles. The result leaves the Eagles in a tie for third place with Westmont, a pairing that could see the Sea Lions join them with a win on Saturday at The Master's and a win by Cal Baptist over the Warriors.
Concordia (12-4-1, 6-3-1 GSAC) opens up play in the NAIA Region II Tournament next Tuesday, October 30. Pairings for the 8-team, single-elimination event will be released on Sunday.
