Three Times the Charm for Eagles Over Sunbirds
Box Score
(10/20/07 - Women's Soccer) IRVINE - Sophomore forward Trina McGee netted a pair of goals to lead #9-ranked Concordia to a 3-1 win over visiting Fresno Pacific, Saturday afternoon in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
The win was a big one for the Eagles, who bounced back from a 3-0 loss on Tuesday at Azusa Pacific to earn three more points and keep pace in the race for second place in the GSAC with Westmont.
McGee recorded her seventh multiple-goal game of the season and ran her school-record scoring total to 18 for the season. She also leads the GSAC in scoring during conference play with 12 goals and 24 points.
Her first came in the 18th minute, the first time the Eagles had netted a first half tally since McGee scored with less than two minutes remaining before the break in a 4-0 win over Biola two weeks ago. Aubrey Abercrombie played a ball from midfield that caught McGee in stride. She powered past one defender and slotted the ball into the corner.
Brianne Wahrenbrock doubled the advantage with her 10th goal of the campaign at 31:49. Caitlin Schneider lofted the ball from the right wing with Wahrenbrock slicing toward goal. Wahrenbrock collected the ball just outside the 6-yard box and tapped the ball into the left corner.
The Sunbirds (6-5-4, 1-4-3 GSAC) pulled a goal back in the 57th minute to keep the Eagles from thinking they would be able to cruise to the win without a fight. A free kick from the right bounced into the Concordia area, where the ball was headed off the post. However, the Eagles did not parry the rebound and Jeanna Ruble rose to head it in.
McGee made sure of the points just three minutes later as she won another foot race toward goal. This time, Natalie Tankersley played a perfect ball into her path for McGee to poke into the lower right corner.
Suzanne Torres picked up the win in nets for the Eagles, making three saves. The teams each had 8 shots for the game, but the Eagles enjoyed a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Concordia (12-3-1, 6-2-1 GSAC) wraps up the 2007 regular season this Wednesday, October 24 against 17th-ranked Point Loma Nazarene, a 2-0 victim to Azusa Pacific in San Diego.
