(10/10/07 - Women's Soccer) IRVINE - Sophomore forward Trina McGee netted a second half hat trick to set a school record for goals in a season, leading #10-ranked Concordia to a 4-0 win over 18th-ranked Vanguard, Wednesday afternoon in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
McGee, who entered the game with 13 goals on the campaign, sat one shy of the single-season mark held by Amy Ross set during the 2003 season. Her three-goal flurry over a span of 13 minutes boosted her free and clear of that mark and helped the Eagles put away the Lions.
"It felt amazing to have everyone supporting me and be as excited as I was to beat the record," said McGee, whose 22 career tallies put her fifth on the Concordia all-time list. "Hamid wanted me to train hard last summer because he wanted me to be a better player and I wanted to prove to him that I could be that go-to player."
Following a scoreless first half, the Eagles came flying out of the break and got the only goal they would need within the first 97 seconds of the second stanza. Zahira Montanez stepped over to a corner kick on the right side and connected her pass with the head of Aubrey Abercrombie, whose header snuck through the Vanguard backline for the 1-0 lead.
As the Eagles soared in confidence and began to control the tempo of the game, the time came for McGee to make her mark and put the game away. She tied the record at 61:26 with a nifty shot off the outside of the right boot from 8 yards out after Brianne Wahrenbrock hit a perfect first-time pass from Shayla Collie to put McGee into space.
McGee put her name at the top of the list just four minutes later as Montanez picked up her second assist of the season. Montanez picked up the ball near midfield and dribbled through several players before picking out McGee darting into the box. McGee blasted a 12-yard shot over the head of Jillian Foss and the celebration ensued.
"Trina worked hard this summer, but she got injured just before the season started," said head coach Hamid Sedehi. "She was only playing 30 minutes a game during the non-conference schedule. When we started GSAC, she started turning the corner and we started rewarding her a little bit."
"Trina is special. She's a player with size, but she's also very skillful on the ball. That combination can be very deadly with her speed and she definitely knows how to put the ball into the net. She still has a little ways to go, but right now we're ecstatic with where she is at."
The goal that completed the hat trick was the most unconventional, but also showed her potency anytime she has the ball in the box. Danielle Garvin put McGee in behind the Vanguard defense, but the pass was angled slightly to the left of goal. McGee struck the ball with her left foot and the shot cleared the fingertips of Foss and found space in the right corner.
Suzanne Torres made three saves in goal for the Eagles as they picked up their fourth-straight shutout, netting 14 goals along the way. Foss had four stops in the nets for Vanguard (7-3-3, 2-2-2 GSAC).
Concordia (11-2-0, 5-1-0 GSAC) hits the road this Saturday, October 13 to take on Westmont with kickoff set for 3:00 p.m.
