Ten Minute Stretch Seals 4-0 Win
Box Score
(10/6/07 - Women's Soccer) IRVINE - Three goals over a period of ten minutes around the halftime intermission sealed the points for #11-ranked Concordia in a 4-0 win over visiting Biola, Saturday afternoon in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
While Concordia controlled a great deal of the possession in the first half, they had little to show for it as there were just five total shots taken over the opening 42 minutes of play. All of that quickly changed as the final two minutes of the first half ticked away.
Sophomore forward Trina McGee took a quick pass from Shayla Collie to go free toward the Biola goal, but McGee was taken down in the area for a penalty kick. Taryn Flamson came up from her defender post to take the kick, but rang her shot off the post before Lauren Gregston was able to smother the rebound.
While it looked as if the rest of the half would tick away, Concordia quickly answered to take the lead. Aubree Caruana came up with the ball on the left side and fired it across the box to McGee. The Concordia leading scorer touched into space and made no mistake with her 10-yard shot for her 12th goal of the season with just 1:18 left before the break.
Concordia came out with a renewed passion to start the second half and managed to double their advantage after just 1:17. Caitlin Schneider played a ball through the Biola backline and into the path of Brianne Wahrenbrock. She pushed into the area and slotted the ball into the left corner to set the Eagles off and running.
McGee added her second of the match at the 53:41 mark and put the game well out of reach. Zahira Montanez stepped to the right corner flag and fired the ball across the box. McGee rose above the crowd of players and slammed a header back across goal for her 13th of the season. She now sits just one goal shy of matching the single season program record of 14 held by Amy Ross.
Collie put the finishing touches on the win with a smart finish off a feed by McGee at the 73:18 mark. Collie raced in behind the Biola defense and won a footrace to the ball. She touched it around Gregston and fired toward the opposite post to make it 4-0 for the home side.
Neither Suzanne Torres or Jamie Carney were forced to make a save as the Eagles kept their sixth clean sheet of the season. Gregston had a pair of saves before Shannon Carter took over for the final nine minutes for Biola (2-6-2, 0-3-2 GSAC).
Concordia (10-2, 4-1 GSAC) hosts Vanguard on Wednesday, October 10 in a rematch of last season's NAIA Region II quarterfinal game with kickoff set for 3:00 p.m.
