Hat Trick Highlights 5-0 Victory
Box Score
(9/29/07 - Women's Soccer) IRVINE - Sophomore forward Trina McGee netted her first career hat trick to lead #18-ranked Concordia to a 5-0 thrashing of visiting The Master's, Saturday afternoon in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
McGee, who now has four multiple-goal games on the season, ran her team-leading total to 11 to leave her just three goals shy of matching the program's single-season record of 14 set by Amy Ross in 2003. The last time a Concordia player scored at least three goals was a school-record four-goal performance by Kelli Chase on September 24, 2005 against Embry-Riddle.
The Eagles got an early scare from the Mustangs as the long throw-in of Carly Heinzen bounced in the Concordia box and rang off the post before being cleared from danger. The wake-up call seemed to thrust the team into action and the opening goal was not too far coming.
McGee tallied the first two Concordia goal on the day within the first half hour of play. She thundered home a powerful header off a corner kick, just moments after Aubrey Abercrombie had nearly done the same thing but had her attempt batted off the line by Maria Loza. McGee, however, made no mistake with her attempt and put it over everyone to open the scoring at 20:17.
The second goal came at 31:33 as she used her speed and strength to win a foot race after the ball had been cleared out of the Concordia end and was rolling toward the Mustangs' goal. Though Loza came out to challenge, McGee was stronger in the collison and poked the ball free before pushing it into the open net.
Freshman Shayla Collie doubled her season total with arguably the neatest finish of the afternoon. Kaitlyn Lux fired a pinpoint cross from 30 yards toward the left side of goal into the path of Collie. She collected the ball and deftly chipped the ball over Loza into the far corner less than five minutes after the intermission.
Taryn Flamson converted her second penalty kick of the season at 57:20 after Collie had been brought down in the area to make it 4-0. McGee completed the afternoon with another breakaway, this time giving strike partner Brianne Wahrenbrock an assist as McGee tucked the ball into the right side of the goal.
Suzanne Torres did not have to make a save over the first 58 minutes of play before Jamie Carney came on and made one stop to complete the shutout. Loza made three saves for the Mustangs (2-6-1, 1-2-0), who were outshot 16-6 for the match.
Concordia (8-2-0, 2-1-0 GSAC) visits San Diego Christian this Tuesday, October 2 with kickoff set for 3:00 p.m.
