(9/26/07 - Women's Soccer) FULLERTON - Sophomore Trina McGee scored a pair of goals at opposite ends of the game to lead #18-ranked Concordia to a convincing 5-1 win over host Hope International, Wednesday afternoon in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
"The fact that (Brianne Wahrenbrock) and I have played in club together for a few years has helped a lot," said McGee of her strike partner that is even with her at 8 goals apiece on the season. "We've been training a lot harder and we want to do really well in the GSAC, so we've been working hard to get to that goal."
McGee got the Eagles off and soaring just 7:11 into the game after she knocked home a rebound from short range. Her second goal iced the game at the 81:25 mark as she and Wahrenbrock executed a perfect 2-on-2 break. Wahrenbrock provided the service that split the two defenders and McGee curled the ball around to the left of Rebecca Dixon.
Though the Eagles took the early lead, the Royals looked hungry for an equalizer and found it from their leading scorer just after the half-hour mark. Harmony Pruett raced to the corner of the Concordia box to track down a loose ball and fired toward the back post. Her effort rang off the post and bounced into the goal to level the teams.
The Eagles bounced back to life after the goal and found the eventual game-winner just seconds before the halftime whistle. Freshman Danielle Garvin collected the ball midway into the Hope half and spotted Natalie Tankersley on the right side. Garvin slotted a perfect ball between a pair of defenders and Tankersley won a foot race to the ball, cleverly chipping the ball with the outside of her left foot into the corner of the net.
Garvin tallied her first collegiate goal with only 1:10 elapsed in the second half. Kaitlyn Lux fired a corner kick toward the near post, where McGee nearly netted another goal. Rebecca Dixon pushed the ball off the crossbar, but Garvin pounced on the loose ball and poked it into the net.
Zahira Montanez wrapped up the scoring for the Eagles as she was set behind the defense by Aubrey Abercrombie to tally her second goal of the season.
"I thought we played our best game of the season on Saturday against Cal Baptist, but it was unfortunate that we just didn't put our chances away," said head coach Hamid Sedehi, whose team got back into the win column after suffering consecutive losses. "Getting that first conference win is huge because it puts you on the right track and if we can string a few like this together, we put some pressure on other teams when we play each other."
Suzanne Torres played the first 74 minutes of the game and made a pair of saves before Jamie Carney finished off the game and made one save. Dixon made seven stops in nets for Hope International (7-2-1, 1-1-0 GSAC).
Concordia (7-2-0, 1-1-0) hosts The Master's in its home GSAC opener this Saturday, September 29th to open up a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
