Clouds Can't Darken Eagle Spirits
(1/28/08 - Men's Track and Field) IRVINE - The 2008 indoor track and field season got off to an impressive start for the Concordia men as several Eagles qualified for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships on Friday at the CUI All-Comers meet.
Headlining the field for the Eagles was newcomer Michael Leonetti, who set a school-record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.2. His sixth place overall finish in a talented field including several GSAC schools was the first for the Concordia program. With a fine time in just his first attempt, head coach Martin Gonzalez expects that time to continue to be lowered throughout the season.
All-American Paul Castaneda got his senior campaign off to a strong start with a throw of 55'10.75" in the shot put. For the first time, he will have company in the ring as both Shane Mervau and Chad Smith competed in the event for the Eagles. Mervau recorded a throw of 53'10" while Smith tallied a toss of 53'1.5". All three marks were good enough to qualify for nationals, setting the team up for a strong base of points.
Two runners made their debut for the Eagles and impressed the coaches with their efforts. Ryan Allen gave a solid effort in the mile while former basketball player Nate Winkler put on the spikes and had a busy afternoon in the 60- and 200-meter races while also running in the 4x400-meter relay.
The Eagles will continue their indoor campaign this Friday, February 1 with another open All-Comers meet on campus starting with the throwing events at 12:30 p.m.
