(10/17/07 - Men's Golf) LONG BEACH - Junior Ryan Kelley fired a final-round total of 3-under 69 to finish in a tie for 10th place, leading host Concordia to a 4th place finish at the Concordia University Invitational at Skylinks Golf Club.
Following a pair of sub-par performances as a team to start the Fall season, head coach Joey Cerulle was very pleased with the improvement his team showed in its final outing of the calendar year. The Eagles turned in three-straight rounds under the 300 mark and were consistent from start to finish.
"This was finally our breakout tournament of the season," said Cerulle, who took the Eagles to their first NAIA Tournament this past Spring in just the second season of competition for the program. "The guys learned a lot from our first two events, especially our tournament in Victoria, and made some great strides over the last two days."
Kelley carded the team's first sub-70 round of the season, matching the second-lowest round of the day. Only tournament winner Mitchell Evanecz of Victoria (B.C.) and runner-up Sam Cyr of Point Loma Nazarene went lower with matching scores of 6-under 66.
Cerulle was also pleased with the play of freshman Max Cohen, who finished 15th overall with a 4-over par total of 220. He played the first two rounds on Monday to even par before turning in a 76 on Tuesday to complete his best two-day performance as a collegian.
"I was very pleased with how Max played this week," said Cerulle. "He was very solid on Monday and despite struggling a little bit on Tuesday, I thought he played very well."
Andrew Kitching was another consistent performer for the Eagles, carding a pair of 2-over rounds of 74 to finish tied for 20th at 8-over 224. Sterling Whitaker shared 24th overall after posting a 9-over total of 225, highlighted by an even-par second round on Monday. Also competing for the Eagles were Eric Christman (243) and Bradley Knight (262).
