Sixth Seed Sounds Sweet to Eagles
Official Bracket
(3/12/08 - Men's Basketball) IRVINE - Two-time defending GSAC champion Concordia was handed the sixth seed and was paired against Campbellsville (Ky.) on Thursday, March 20 at 2:15 p.m. (CST) in the opening round of the 2008 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship.
At first look at the complete bracket, head coach Ken Ammann and his staff must have had a considerable case of deja vu set in. A year ago in the second round of the tournament, the Eagles took on Campbellsville and moved on to the quarterfinals after posting a 83-72 victory.
Going back to the 2003 tournament, the Eagles were also named the #6 seed in their first appearance since the 1999 season and debut under Ammann. One of the victims for the Eagles on their way to their first-ever national championship was McKendree (Ill.), a potential second round opponent in this year's event.
The Eagles earned an automatic berth to the tournament by winning the GSAC regular season and tournament titles. The team will be making its sixth appearance at the tournament and fifth in seven seasons with Ammann at the helm.
Campbellsville, located in Campbellsville, Kentucky, entered the field thanks to one of 16 at-large berths awarded to complete the field of 32. The Tigers finished third in the Mid-South conference behind top-seeded and undefeated Georgetown and Cumberlands. They also took third in the Mid-South tournament, falling to Cumberlands, 73-63.
Concordia is 15-4 at the NAIA Tournament in five previous appearances. The 1999 Eagles behind all-time leading scorer Josh Giles advanced to the quarterfinal round. When Ammann and his Eagles returned in 2003, they won five-straight games to claim the national crown, including a thrilling 88-84 overtime win over Mountain State (W.Va.). Ammann is 13-3 in his four previous appearances.
All 31 games of the tournament are available for viewing on a pay-per-view basis through the NAIA website. Individual games can be viewed for $7.95 while an all-tournament package is available for $24.95. The final two rounds of the tournament will be shown live on CBS College Sports Television, formerly known as CSTV, as well as streamed online. Live stats will also be available for each game.
