Game One      Game Two

(3/15/08 - Baseball) IRVINE - Junior RHP Dan Orlick tossed a three-hit shutout while striking out a pair of batters in a 5-0 win for host Concordia over California Baptist after dropping the first game of a GSAC doubleheader, 16-7.

Orlick (2-3) picked up his second-straight victory thanks to some timely double plays that allowed him to cruise through the middle innings. He also did not allow an extra-base hit to slow down a California Baptist offense that had pounded the Eagles for 16 runs on 20 hits in the opener.

California Baptist (19-8, 9-7 GSAC) briefly threatened in the 2nd and 3rd innings, but each time Orlick was able to wiggle out of trouble. In both innings, the Lancers had runners on 1st and 2nd with either none or one out. However, each time Orlick produced ground balls or pop ups in the infield that kept the game scoreless.

Concordia got on the board in its half of the third with a pair of runs after just the first two batters. Gregg Davidson singled to lead off the inning to bring Beau Poteet to the plate. The sophomore OF originally showed bunt, but drew his bat back before offering with an abbreviated swing. Poteet drew enough power from his solid contact to hit a line drive that sailed over the fence in left-center for the lead.

Davidson and Poteet briefly shared the team lead in home runs, but Davidson reclaimed the title for himself one inning later. With one out and Mike Gonzalez on first after drawing a leadoff walk, Davidson drilled his 4th home run of the season to center field for a 4-0 advantage.

The Eagles tacked on a final insurance run in the 5th inning after Matt Ross legged out a leadoff bunt single, took second on a balk and touched the final two bases thanks to sacrifices by Aric Weinberg and Nathan Dean, respectively.

The game one story was very different as the Lancers scored at least once in each of the 1st four innings, then put up 7 runs in the 6th inning to claim a 13-2 lead. J.P. LaPointe went 5-for-6 in the opener while Steve Goins (6-2) was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI while also earning the win on the mound, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits in 7 innings while striking out six.

Davidson led the way on offense for the Eagles, finishing the day 6-for-9 with a double, home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Poteet and Ross each had two hits in the finale.

Concordia (7-9, 6-8 GSAC) takes a brief hiatus from GSAC play this Tuesday, March 18 to visit Cal State Los Angeles for a single non-conference game starting at 3:00 p.m.
