Looseleaf Theatre Co.
In 2011, CUI’s theatre department launched a professional theatre company to give students internship opportunities in acting and design – providing opportunities for them to perform and learn alongside working professionals in a summer stock environment. The company was named “Looseleaf" in reference to Concordia’s beautiful 400-seat outdoor amphitheater where the performances take place and to allude to the company’s focus on classics (which could be found in older books, which could have loose leaf binding …)
In 2012 Looseleaf’s first production - Shakespeare's Twelfth Night was attended by 1388 people over 5 performances (see photos under “Productions 2011-12”). Audiences picnicked, laughed, and gave the performances standing ovations.
Concordia students work in all areas including acting, stage management, costumes, and backstage technical areas. They are joined by professional designers and actors from L.A., Orange County, and Hollywood. Looseleaf allows Concordia students the chance to "get their feet wet" in the profession and gain their first professional credits while still in college. In 2015, Looseleaf entered into an arrangement with Actor’s Equity – the professional union for stage actors and stage managers which allows it to employ union actors.
Now in its 5th season, Looseleaf has gone on to stage Shakespeare’s As You Like It set in the 1960’s. (see the video trailer on the side), The Comedy of Errors (see the 2013-14 production photos), and The Merchant of Venice. In 2016, Looseleaf will stage Romeo and Juliet.
