Concordia University, Irvine is exceedingly proud of the men and women who comprise the Forensics coaching staff. Each week, these men and women give countless hours to students. Here is a little bit more about them.
Konrad Hack – Director of Forensics
The founding director of the Concordia Forensics Team, Konrad earned a B.A. from Biola University and an M.A. from San Diego State University, both in Communication. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D from Loughborough University (UK).
He has been recognized for coaching excellence, receiving the NPDA Distinguished Service Award, the Jack Howe Award from PSCFA, and the Quintilian award from Point Loma Nazarene University. Konrad’s squads have won 4 NPDA team national titles and his students have won 24 speech and 7 debate Christian College national titles.
Konrad has served as debate tabulation director for over 150 tournaments, as well as the tournament director for NPDA Nationals (2004-2007). As a faculty member, he teaches a wide variety of communication courses in the Department of Communication Studies. Konrad and his wife Deborah are the proud parents of two adorable young boys.
Kevin Calderwood – Director of Debate
After completing his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Arts in Speech Communication, both from Southern Illinois University, Kevin joined the coaching staff at Concordia. As a competitor, Kevin’s substantial accomplishments include winning the 2009 National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence (and was in finals in 2010) as well as top speaker honors at the 2008 NPDA National Tournament.
Kevin’s presence at Concordia was felt immediately. Under his leadership, CUI debate took home the 2013 NPDA National Tournament Sweepstakes Championship. When coaching, Kevin combines his vast debate experience and a desire to make students better thinkers and advocates to prepare them for lives of service in the church and society.
Kevin is also a member of the Department of Communication Studies where he teaches a number of communication courses.
Jannese Davidson – Director of Individual Events
A graduate of Arizona State University with a double major in Theater and Communication, Jannese advanced to elimination rounds in all three event genres (limited preparation, interpretation and platform speaking) in multiple years at both the AFA-NIET and NFA National tournaments. After graduating, Jannese spent the next 6 years working as an actor and stand-up comic, including 2 years as a company member with the National Comedy Theatre of Phoenix.
As a coach, Jannese ignites fire and passion in her students to care about the world and to utilize their speech events to create advocacy and social justice. Jannese's expertise includes tools to help create very distinct, subtle and honest characters. This has resulted in students that placed 3rd in Dramatic Interpretation and 6th in Duo Interpretation at NFL Nationals.
Col. Andrew Grimalda – Assistant Coach
An Assistant Professor in the School of Business, Andy holds a B.S. degree from the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) and a Masters in Management Sciences from M.I.T. For 4 years, he was the Director of Forensics at West Point where he coached both debate and individual events. He brings a wealth of experience as a senior manager and entrepreneur. He recently sold his business that he grew to rank among the 100 largest medical billing companies in the country. Previously, Andy served as a CFO for 13 years.
As an Airborne-Ranger, Andy commanded a battalion size unit during Desert Storm. His management duties have included logistical operations for reserve units located in the Northeast U.S. and command responsibility for the professional development/classroom training of officers stationed in the Northeast U.S.
Andy and his wife Margaret are the proud parents of three adult boys.
