Director of Parish Music

The Director of Parish Music (DPM) Program grants the bachelor of arts degree and the Christ College certificate, with which the candidate is eligible to receive a divine call to serve in a congregation or other agency affiliated with The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

Director of Parish Music Program Requirements:

A. General Education:
Normally completed during the first two years of attendance. The student may, if placed by examination, substitute Mus 201 in the music major for the Mus 101 Fine Arts option in general education.
 
B. Major Requirements: (Music - 45 units)

C. Christ College Certificate Requirements: (21 units)

D. DPM Program Requirements (15 units)
Mus 390: Practicum in Music Leadership - 3 units
Mus 482: Musical Heritage of the Church - 2 units
Mus/Thl 483: Hymnody and Sacred Song - 2 units
Mus/Thl 484: Planning Music in Christian Worship - 2
Thl 382: Corporate Worship - 3
Secondary instruments (in addition to a primary instrument) - 2 units

Students must demonstrate the following skills by graduation:
MUKP 202 if piano is not the primary instrument or MUKO 102 or keyboard improvisation
MUVO 100 (class voice) or
MUVO 101 (private voice) if not the primary instrument

E. Internship (12 units)
The final requirement for DPM certification is a year-long internship, normally during final year of study, in a congregation or agency of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, that will enable students to experience as many aspects of the DPM ministry as possible.
