
Exercise and Sport Science
Emphasis in Taekwondo
The division of Exercise and Sport Science (ESS) now offers an undergraduate emphasis in taekwondo (TKD). This program will fill a distinctive niche of exercise and sport science, sport business, and applied taekwondo. The emphasis would be the first of its kind in the United States, and is modeled on similar programs in the Republic of South Korea, where taekwondo is an academic discipline and profession.
The Exercise and Sport Science Division consists of six highly trained faculty members, three of whom already hold terminal degrees in the discipline.
The Taekwondo Emphasis includes the following but is not limited to: the foundations of Taekwondo movement, forms, competition theory, dojang management, demonstration theory, referee methods, teaching methods, coaching methods, meridians and vital sports.
Grandmaster Chang Jin Kang
Grandmaster Kang holds the highest rank attainable in Taekwondo, a 9th degree black belt. He has dedicated his entire life to the training and teaching of Taekwondo. In addition to his enviable military career, numerous world titles, world records held, and illustrious legacy of teaching. Grandmaster Kang has established a history making crossover this year by serving as both director of the program and the program curriculum. Grandmaster has created a reputation of integrity and respect here in Irvine for more than two decades.
Trained at SONG MOO KWAN (a highly reputable Tae Kwon Do studio in Seoul, Korea)
Won the Taekwondo championships at the Korean National Sport Festival in 1963.
Started the Taekwondo at Irvine Youth Services.
Appointed the Chairman of the Martial Arts Committee by the California State Taekwondo Association and opened the Irvine, California IL-DO Taekwondo School.
Set the world record in 1993 by breaking 1,068 boards in 13 minutes, 57.7 seconds, at Heritage Plaza in Irvine.
Promoted to 9th Degree Black Belt during the first test conducted of its kind.
Achieved a Black Belt in Kum-Do (the art of sword combat) and received 9th Degree Black Belt promotion from Kuk Ki-won.
President of the World Martial Arts Master’s Federation.
Council member of the Advisory council on Democratic and Peaceful Unification of Korea.
Began teaching Taekwondo classes at Concordia University in Irvine in 1998 where he is now the program's director/professor.

Student Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this taekwondo emphasis will:
- Developed taekwondo skills to pass the certification process up to a 4th degree black belt.
- Develop knowledge and skills to pass the certification process to officiate and judge taekwondo matches.
- Learn the physiological, developmental, and academic underpinnings related to taekwondo movements and techniques.
- Know the underlying business knowledge necessary to own and operate a legitimate taekwondo dojang.
- Be able to communicate the standard techniques related to one's self-discipline of mind and body and taekwondo.
- Have the spiritual training to develop the holistic person in their taekwondo training.
- Have the knowledge and training to open a Taekwondo business.

Graduates can earn up to a 3rd or 4th degree black belt. In addition, students can graduate with certification as an instructor and/or a Taekwondo referee. Concordia will also help in the search process for possible employment as a dojang manager or as an instructor.
