Art Major, Studio Art emphasis

Katrina using mini-collage while painting details.

I'm a junior at Concordia University and my major is art with an emphasis in studio art. I have taken many different art classes at Concordia, which I have enjoyed very much. Taking these classes has introduced me to different mediums, but my favorite media to work with are paints; particularly acrylic and oil. The artistic process that I use for creating my paintings is the mini-collage. In the beginning, I try to think of a theme and then look for images in magazines and photographs. Once I have the images, I cut and paste them together in order to make one image. After that step is completed, I start painting the image onto the canvas. During this process, I try to follow the mini-collage as much as I can; painting in every detail. Adding in details such as the tints and shades on objects and people really helps in creating a dynamic painting.

Megan Selgado creates intricate patterns in her imagery with an emphasis on India ink and conte crayon. Megan's imagery comes alive with her strong interest in color as well. She works both from her imagination and references. Megan's love for her image making and her skill set are flourishing immensely as she studies studio art at CUI.

Rachel Beyer

Rachel Beyer is interested in painting the figure in a realistic light. She renders her forms with a subtle color scheme and she enjoys capturing intriguing metaphors in her images as well. Rachel's study of English at CUI weaves itself naturally into her painting. Her paintings also emphasize a shallow sense of space, while leading the viewer to contemplate the significance of her figures' lives and their relationship to each other. Through this study, Rachel's work as a painter is developing in a thoughtful light.

Kristine Sixsmith

Title: “Pandora’s Music Box”
Artist: Kristine Sixsmith
Media: Mixed Media

Here we see Kristine Sixsmith working on assembling her mixed media installation called “Pandora’s Music Box”. Kristine is very resourceful, not afraid of tackling new media even if it involves substantial research and learning how to use new tools and equipment.

Kristine had to redesign her installation during a few “trials and errors” as she faced unexpected difficulties, but she always kept her positive attitude and found ways of solving the challenges.

The installation had to be moved a few times between different locations during the process of designing it, something that is quite challenging. It requires quite a bit of patience on the part of the artist.

Kristine is also a talented water-colorist. This painting is called “Future’s Beginning.”
