Ronald A. Van Blarcom
MCAA 580 Legal Aspect of Sport
During the last three years, Ronald A. Van Blarcom has instructed over 500 students in the fundamental and emerging legal issues applicable to contemporary sport. As an adjunct instructor for Concordia University, he currently teaches Legal Aspects of Sport to students in the Masters of Coaching and Athletic Administration program and Sports Law to students in the Exercise and Sports Science program.
Ron has been a practicing California lawyer for over 25 years. He has served as general counsel to several public agencies and nonprofit organizations, and currently serves as General Counsel to Concordia University in Irvine CA. He has spent significant time advising governing boards and management staff on general legal matters relating to contracts, finances, personnel issues and regulatory compliance. Ron has represented cities, water districts, public agencies, high schools, nonprofit organizations, community groups, land development companies and individuals. He is no stranger to litigation, and has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in numerous lawsuits. He is counsel of record in two reported California Appellate Court cases.
A graduate of Concordia University in Irvine CA (BA 1983) and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco CA (JD 1986), Ron began his legal career with Best, Best & Krieger in Riverside CA. He later moved to Orange County to practice with Stradling, Yocca, Carlson & Rauth in Newport Beach CA. In 1993, he founded Van Blarcom, Leibold, McClendon & Mann, a law firm that specialized in serving public agency clients and in assisting private sector clients in their dealings with public agencies. In 2006, he began an independent law practice providing legal assistance and counsel to select clients.
Ron does not hesitate to share his legal expertise by serving on committees, speaking to various groups, writing articles for publication and teaching. He began teaching in 1988 at Concordia University Irvine CA. From 1994-2006 he taught at Chapman University in Orange CA. During his career, he has taught legal concepts to well over 1,000 students at both the masters and undergraduate levels.
