MA in Family Life Ministry

The latest U.S. Census figures confirm that nearly half of all marriages fail and the statistics for re-marriage are even more dismal. Co-habitation before marriage is common in today’s society and yet, statistics show that this pattern of behavior does not improve chances for a successful marriage.

Today’s families are hurting. With the rise in alternative family patterns, blended families, and abuse and violence, families are in great need of help. Families suffer from poverty, isolation and stress on a daily basis.

The church is in a unique to provide comfort and meet the needs of families. It is the responsibility of the church to bring the Gospel message of hope and healing not only to suffering families but also to assist healthy families to become stronger.  A healthy family is centered on a relationship with Jesus Christ and it is the church that has the ability to bring that message to today’s families.

At its 2004 Synodical Convention, the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) recognized Family Life Ministers as a category on the Roster of Synod. There is a great need for trained professionals to support families through Christian principles based on Lutheran doctrine.

Concordia University is in a unique position to provide training in Family Ministry. Therefore the division of Social Sciences proposes a new master’s degree in Family Ministry. This program will fill a distinct void in the training of persons committed to family ministry. In addition, Concordia’s program will provide leadership in an area that has not been given previous attention at the master’s level.

This program is supported by an Advisory Committee comprised of Directors of Christian Education and Early Childhood Administrators from local Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Congregations. The Social Science division at Concordia University consists of six full-time faculty members, one of whom holds a terminal degree in family studies, two hold terminal degrees in psychology, and one in anthropology.
