Concordia Offers New Special Education Credential Program - Concordia University Irvine

Irvine, CA—Concordia University Irvine is pleased to announce a new special education program starting fall 2011. The program of coursework and field experiences will lead to the preliminary California Education Specialist: Mild–Moderate Teaching Credential.

The special education credential authorizes the teacher to work with students with specific learning disabilities, mild-moderate developmental delays, autism spectrum disorders, other health impairments, and emotional disturbance from kindergarten through age 22.

Concordia’s Special Education program is comprised of 35 units of coursework and field experiences. There are two semesters of coursework followed by a semester of full time student teaching. Coursework is designed for the working professional with classes being held in the evening hours.

In addition to the stand-alone credential program, a combined credential and Master’s in Education degree program is offered. The candidate will earn both the Educational Specialist: Mild-Moderate Credential and a Master of Arts in Education degree in this combined program.

The special education credential will be offered on Concordia’s beautiful Irvine campus, and at its regional center in Temecula. Noting the increased demand for trained special education professionals, Concordia’s administration, faculty and prospective students expressed keen interest and support for the new offering. “We are very excited to add the special education credential to our credential program offerings. Many faculty and advisory board members dedicated countless hours to making this a reality,” said Janice Nelson, Dean of the School of Education.
