CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY IRVINE HOSTS EVENT TO COMMEMORATE THE LEGACY OF JOHN MUIR

John Muir Memorial Endowed Chair in Geography Will Discuss Muir’s Impact on Public Policy 100 Years After His Passing

 

IRVINE, Calif. – March 09, 2015 – Concordia University Irvine’s School of Business today announced the Center for Public Policy will host “A Century Beyond John Muir,”a look at the legacy of the naturalist, author and environmentalist 100 years after his death. Featuring John Muir Memorial Chair of Geography and UCLA Distinguished Professor Glen M. MacDonald, the presentation will be held at the Newport Beach Public Library, 1000 Avocado in Newport Beach, Calif. on Thursday, March 19.

                “Muir was influential to the preservation of nature and striking a balance between human activity and conservation, and he helped preserve the Yosemite Valley and founded the Sierra Club, one of the first large-scale environmental preservation organizations in the world,” said Keith Curry, director of the Concordia University Center for Public Policy. “This program will discuss the impact of Muir’s efforts with data on current conditions in our state and period photos of Muir and of 19th and 20th century California.”

                Glen M. MacDonald was named the first holder of UCLA’s John Muir Memorial Endowed Chair in Geography. He is also a UC presidential chair and former director of the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability from 2009-2014. He is a professor of geography and professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCLA. His research focuses on climate change, its causes and its impact on the environment and society.

                The Concordia University Center for Public Policy, a program in the School of Business, brings together diverse points of view in Orange County, Calif. to focus on critical issues in public policy. These issues include fiscal sustainability, pension reform, workforce development, government efficiency, social services, public safety,environmental policy and economic development. Through the center, Concordia works with elected officials, labor and business groups, public sector managers and local residents to serve as a forum for discussion and dialogue.
