Irvine, CA -(December 4, 2014)- One of Concordia’s most popular events of the year is ushering in the Christmas season with the combined musical power of the Concordia Choir, Donne di Canto, Men’s Chorus, Master Chorale, Sinfonietta, Percussion Ensemble and Concert Handbells. “A Rose in Winter” is the theme of this year’s Concordia Christmas Concert.

“It is definitely an honor and a rather humbling experience to touch so many people each year through the Concordia Christmas Concerts. Many who attend our performances talk about how the beautiful music touches their hearts and faith,” said Dr. Michael Busch, who is in charge of the concerts. The five concert performances from December 6th to 13th have been sold out since early November, demonstrating how many excited patrons there are for the annual concert series which has grown tremendously in the past years. . Busch added that “it is a joy to see how our concerts bring a community together.”

For many, attending the Concordia Christmas concert is a tradition, but each year offers something new. The theme, “A Rose in Winter” stems from Jesus becoming our Christmas Rose. Busch said, “Several of our selections revolve around this imagery, including the traditional 16th-century carol ‘Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming,’ along with some gorgeous modern adaptations of the text ‘There is No Rose of such Virtue.’”

The ever-evolving showcase has not shied away from continual audience favorites though. “This year we bring back a tradition started several years ago. The combined choruses will perform a Nigerian carol called ‘Betelehemu’ with our Percussion Ensemble playing African instruments” stated Busch excitedly. On top of this and other pieces, the Concert Handbells have branched into exciting territory in their entertaining version of ‘White Christmas.’

The 140 performers will use their combined talents to bring to life the sound of this Season and honor the reason for this holiday, Jesus Christ.
