Concordia University School of Business Announces 4th Annual "Teen Entrepreneur Academy" Summer Business Start-up Program

IRVINE, Calif., (April 13, 2015) — The School of Business at Concordia University Irvine (CUI) is building on the success of its summer business training program for high school students with the announcement of the fourth annual Teen Entrepreneur Academy (TEA). TEA 2015 will take place Sunday, July 12 through Saturday, July 18 and provides an intensive hands-on summer business academy that offers real-world, technical and practical training in how to launch a business. Last summer, 80 teenagers from six states and three countries participated in TEA.

According to the a 2012 Gallup Study of high school teens across America, 80 percent reported they wish they had more business classes and 75 percent said they want to start their own business. Concordia’s innovative five-day business start-up academy addresses these needs and welcomes 100 local and international students, who will live on campus for one-week and learn the basic principles of business start-up, free enterprise and entrepreneurship.  Students will also create an actual plan to launch their businesses.

“Today’s students are tomorrow’s business owners and leaders, and effectively preparing them for success depends not only on what they learn but also how they learn,” said Stephen Christensen, dean of the School of Business for CUI and TEA program founder. “Concordia University’s Teen Entrepreneur Academy is a hands-on training program that encourages students to follow their career ambitions by providing a foundation of business understanding and experience that includes everything from marketing, start-up budgeting and managing cash flow to ethics and character, equipping them to achieve their dreams as purposeful and productive business leaders.” 

Citi Business Plan Competition Sponsorship Helps Bring Entrepreneurial Education to Life

The week-long program will culminate in the Citi Business Plan Competition, where participants will present original business plans and compete for a $1,000 start-up funding. Sponsored by Citi, the final round of the competition is open to the public and will take place on Friday, July 17 at 5:00 p.m. on the CUI campus.   In addition to sponsoring the business plan competition, Citi will conduct a course on creating a start-up budget and will provide mentors and coaches to support the students throughout the week.

The TEA curriculum offers practical courses, combined with group activities and an active learning environment. Designed for the high school mind, TEA utilizes “whole brain” teaching to provide engaging lessons, field trips and group work to involves students and ignite innovative thinking. Participants live on the CUI campus during the week of the program, providing a full emersion experience.

TEA 2015 applications are currently being accepted, and the registration deadline is April 30. The programcost is $1,000 for U.S. students and $1,500 for international students and includes campus room and board, books, field trips and classes.
