Conduct Process

Through intentional conversation and activities that promote reflective learning, the Office of Student Conduct strives to address unacceptable conduct in a manner that informs and guides students on their journey towards becoming wise, honorable, and cultivated citizens. The student conduct process is a learning experience that can result in growth and personal understanding of one’s responsibilities and privileges within both the university community and the greater community.

Listed below is a brief synopsis of the conduct process. The Student Code of Conduct lists more detailed information about this process for which you are accountable. We encourage you to read the Code to find out further details about what happens with conduct cases.

The Process:

How does a student conduct case begin?
The Office of Student Conduct becomes aware of a potential violation of the Student Code of Conduct. This can be through a report from Resident Assistants, Resident Directors, Campus Safety, or Concordia faculty and staff.

What happens next?
You will receive a letter via your Eagles email account asking you to schedule a hearing with a hearing officer. The letter will provide a brief description of the allegations.

It is important to schedule a hearing and attend it. Ignoring the situation will not make it go away. If you do not respond, a decision can be made in the case without your input.

What happens in the administrative hearing?
In the hearing, the student(s) and hearing officer review the incident report and allegations. The hearing officer will ask questions about the allegations and answer any questions the student might have about the incident and the student conduct process.

Following this conversation and any investigation, the judicial hearing officer decides whether the student is found responsible or not responsible for violating the Student Code of Conduct. You will receive a letter via your Eagles email account outlining the hearing officer’s decision and sanction(s). See the Student Code of Conduct 2012 -2013 for a list of possible sanctions.

Can I appeal a decision if I am found responsible?
Students may appeal a decision if one or more of the following circumstances occurred:

  • A procedural error was prejudicial to the rights of the student;
  • The sanction is inappropriate; or
  • New information is available which was not available at the time of the disciplinary hearing and which would have substantially affected the decision.

Who can I contact if I have questions about the judicial process?
Contact the hearing officer with whom you are working. They can meet or communicate with a student as much as necessary regarding any questions he/she may have.
