1. What if the incident happened off campus?
The University has jurisdiction for behavior off campus. So even if it happens off campus, it may still be a violation of the Student Code of Conduct, which will be handled by the Office of Student Conduct. Remember, you are a representative of Concordia wherever you go.

2. What if I don't show up for my hearing?
Ignoring the situation will not make it go away. The hearing officer will make a decision in the incident without the benefit of your involvement and perspective. Also, you forfeit your right to appeal the decision.

3. What if I was not aware of a policy and didn't know I was breaking it?
Lack of knowledge of a policy is not an excuse for misconduct. Every student is responsible for knowing the rules and regulations found in the Student Code of Conduct. It is important for you to read the 2012 – 2013 Student Code of Conduct and, if you live on campus, the Housing Handbook. If you are unsure about any policies, ask your RA or a RES staff member for clarification.

4. Can't I just lie about the situation and get away with it?
Lying is not a value of our community, and if it should be found that you lied, there can be additional disciplinary charges or consequences.

5. I was put on Probation/Deferred Suspension. What does that mean?
Probation is a specific period of time in which a student has to demonstrate the ability to be a responsible member of the community. Any violation of the Student Code of Conduct or the conditions of probation committed during the probationary period will result in further disciplinary action. Deferred Suspension is a more severe form of probation.
Please see the Sanctions section in the 2012 - 2013 Student Code of Conduct for more detailed explanations.

6. What if I do not complete an assigned sanction?
Failure to complete assigned sanctions is considered a new violation. In some situations, failure to complete sanctions may result in suspension or expulsion from the University. In addition, a hold will be placed on your registration and records. Remember that sanctions are placed as a result of your violation of the Student Code of Conduct and are designed to educate you about your responsibilities and privileges within both the university community and the greater community.

7. Will my parents be told?
Concordia will notify parents/legal guardians of students under the age of 21:
- Following the first known violation of University policy regarding drugs. The notification will be in writing.
- Following the first known violation of University policy regarding alcohol, when the use of alcohol has:
- Placed the student in a life-threatening situation. The notification will be by telephone.
- Endangered the health or welfare of another person. The notification will be in writing.
- Following the second known violation of University policy regarding alcohol. The notification will be in writing.
- Following the student’s referral to the Wellness Center for an alcohol or drug assessment. The notification will be in writing.
In addition, Concordia will notify the parents/legal guardians of any student, regardless of age, when:
- There is a health or safety emergency. This notification will be made by telephone.
- The Dean of Student Affairs deems there are special circumstances that are in the best interest of the student and University to notify the parent. The notification may be in writing or by telephone.
If a student is 21 or over, the parent/legal guardian will be notified when there is a health or safety emergency, or if the Dean of Student Affairs deems there are special circumstances that are in the best interest of the student and University to notify the parent.
*The Dean of Student Affairs will use his/her discretion in the practice of the parent notification policy. If it is deemed counterproductive or inappropriate to notify a parent, then the above listed procedures will be altered accordingly. The University has the right to notify parents and will attempt to follow the above listed policy, using discretion when appropriate.
