Meet the Undergraduate Staff
Hey! I’m Jenna Clow. Don’t be intimidated by the word “writing consultant,” because I’m a student just like you. This is my third year studying Psychology at Concordia University. One day, I will apply my studies in the field of Social Work, Police Psychology, or perhaps as a behavioral analogist under the FBI. I’m not sure yet what God’s plan is. I dream about exploring the beaches, mountains, and cities of our crazy, diverse world. As you can tell, I like using commas and I’m a bit of a grammar freak. I also enjoy creative writing such as poetry and narratives. I have studied under Professor Schmidt, Professor Lee, Drs. Raghinaru, Francisco, Dawn, Schultz, Deen, and Flores. Don’t stress about your paper; I’m here to help. There is a writer inside of you that is clawing to come out!
My name is Kendall Davis and I’m currently a junior here at Concordia. I’m originally from Houston, TX and I’m a double major in biblical languages and theatre, studying in the Pre-Seminary program.
I am extremely familiar with both CMS and MLA formats. I have experience writing everything from research papers to plays. I was even honored to win second place last year in Tier II of the President's Academic Showcase for my research. I have done most of my academic writing within the fields of theology, history, English, and theatre. I have worked under many professors here at Concordia, including Armstrong, Brighton, Bachman, Middendorf, van Voorhis, Vezner, Garton, and Hensley. When I'm not in class or at work, I'm probably at the theatre rehearsing for five different things. I also enjoy reading, writing, learning languages, trying new foods, and spending time with friends. I look forward to working with you on your writing this year so you can turn that paper in with confidence and pride.
Hello! My name is Carrie Gendle, and I’m a senior here at Concordia. I’m an English major with a creative writing minor, and I’m also on the Concordia forensics team. I’ve been blessed to study under some outstanding Concordia professors including Garton, Borst, Lee, Gavin, Loy, and Siegert. From their expertise, I have developed skills such as thesis formation, paragraph structure, proper citation, and grammar improvement that could help you with your own academic and creative writing. Besides my passion for writing, I also enjoy singing loudly (and badly) in my car, traveling with the forensics team, and watching awesome yet nerdy TV shows like Firefly and The Big Bang Theory. I’d be delighted to be a part of the process as you develop your writing skills, gain confidence in your style, and maybe even learn to love writing along the way!
Hello! My name is JD MacWillie, and I'm a junior chemical research major with a minor in mathematics. I love writing in multiple genres be it poetry, short stories, or research papers. I'm super excited to work with you on becoming a better writer and more comfortable with your own writing style. I hope to make your writing process more enjoyable, as well. I enjoy running and outdoor adventuring. I've written for multiple professors here at Concordia including Kenney, Ebel, Malinson, Oesch, Brown, Francisco, Bachman and Raghinaru. I look forward to meeting you and getting to know you as a fellow writer.
Hello! My name is Michaela Mueller, and I'm a junior accounting major with a minor in creative writing. I love writing of all kinds, be it fiction or research papers, and I'm excited to work with students on becoming better writers. I am a big fan of fun, colorful words and grammar, and I promise to make the writing process more enjoyable than you thought it could be. Outside of school, I enjoy playing basketball, singing, and going shoe shopping (who doesn't?!). I've written for many professors here at Concordia including Bachman, Middendorf, Malinson, Espinosa, Brown, Tom, Francisco and Raghinaru. I look forward to meeting you.
Hey there! I’m Danika Schmid, a junior history and political thought major. I hope to someday teach at the high school or college level in the history, writing, or education field. I’m familiar with APA, CMS and MLA as I’ve taken communication, history, theology, English, and creative writing courses under professors such as Armstrong, Ashmon, Bachman, Brown, and Gavin. When I’m not engulfed in schoolwork, I love playing sports, traveling and just spending time outside. Writing can be a difficult process, but I look forward to helping you with any questions you may have.
Hello! My name is Angie Shaw. I'm an English major on my third year here at CUI. I thought being a student would allow me a life of leisure filled with cat naps and TV, but writing for professors like Schmidt, Borst, Pierson, Armstrong, Brown, Garton, and Raghinaru have kept me busy. Fortunately, it was for a good cause. I was able to improve so much through writing for these and other professors, not because being an English major automatically makes me a better writer but because practice does make (at least close to) perfect! Writing is definitely a process, so come to the Writing Center and we'll help you along the way to becoming an awesome writer. If I'm not there you can safely assume I'm tucked away in bed watching Netflix, probably something starring Will Ferrell or Rowan Atkinson because their odd looking faces inexplicably make life better.
Hello! My name is Lauren Stevens and I am a senior psychology major/sociology minor. Some groups that I have been in or are currently involved with include being a PAL and a Student Activities Coordinator for LEAD. I absolutely love engaging with people. I am a member of the Psychology Honors Society PSI CHI, the secretary for the Honors Society of Omicron Delta Kappa, and the Vice President of the Psychology and Behavioral Science club that a fellow classmate and I founded last year. In my spare time I love to read, run, play volleyball, listen to music, hang out with friends, and write poetry. I have had the pleasure of studying under and writing for Bachman, Deen, Raghinaru, Francisco, Lu, and Flores, to name a few. Some of my strengths when writing include forming strong thesis statements, mastering organization/flow, incorporating appropriate grammar, and developing powerful conclusions. My hope for writers who visit the Writing Center is that they walk away feeling confident that a good paper is not out of reach. Hope to see you at the Writing Center!
Meet the Online Staff
Hello! My name is Zach Borst and I am consultant with the online branch of the Writing Center. I am currently a PhD student at UC Riverside studying Greek, Latin, and English literature. I graduated from Concordia Irvine in 2012 with a BA in English and minors in history and classical languages. Last March my college sweetheart and I returned to Concordia for our wedding. I will be working with graduate, adult, and online students, and I am familiar with the citation styles of APA, MLA, and CMS. I look forward to working with you!
Hello all! My name is Kristina Deusch, and I just graduated from
Concordia University Irvine with a Bachelor's degree in English and a minor
in Marketing. I worked with undergraduate students as a Core Peer Tutor and
a Writing Center Consultant during much of my time there. Now I want to
break into the world of publishing in the editorial field. My hobbies
include ringing handbells, eating summer strawberries, and collecting far
too many books than my shelves can hold. I have loved researching and
writing for OWL papers online, and look forward to tackling even more new
writing projects with you!
Hi! I’m Johanna Saleska, a graduate student at the University of Missouri, where I’m pursuing an M.A. in English with a focus in Rhetoric and Composition. I graduated from CUI in 2012 and have been missing it ever since! When I’m not reading or writing, thinking about reading or writing, or writing about reading or writing (yes, you can write about writing), I can be found perusing farmers’ markets, hiking forested trails, or sipping chai lattes whilst weeping over the latest episodes of Downton Abbey. Thanks to this newfangled invention called “the web,” I can help you with your papers all the way from mid-Missouri! I look forward to hearing from you!
Greetings! My Name is Joe Sampson and it is my privilege to serve as a consultant for the CUI Writing Center. I hold a BA in Spanish from the University of LaVerne, and an MA in Religion Education with an emphasis in cross-cultural education from Concordia University Irvine. I am also currently a doctoral candidate in Business Administration and Organizational Leadership at Arizona Northcentral University. I have been blessed to have found career success as a teacher, DCE, and most recently as a law enforcement executive. My hobbies include, playing drums, coaching girls’ volleyball, and of course, reading and writing. Let’s get writing!
Hello, I’m Professor Pamela Wade. As an early alumnus of Christ College Irvine—and then later, Concordia University—I have been blessed with a successful career in both business and education, for which CUI well prepared me and for which, I am incredibly thankful. As such, I welcome this opportunity to work with you in the University’s OWL. An author, co-author, and editor-in-chief for more than thirty, award-winning business books and training programs, it’s been my privilege to be a requested speaker for national and international conferences. In my current consulting work, I appreciate collaboratively designing and implementing results-driven initiatives, with proven ROI. A few achievements include a 1996 Telly Award; a 2002 Training Program of the Year Award; a 20-year circulation for one of my books, available in three languages; and amazing clients ranging from Walt Disney to Genentech to the Vatican. My husband and I actively participate in the community and enjoy residing as “empty-nesters” in Orange County.
