Meet the Undergraduate Staff
Hey! I’m Jenna Clow. Don’t be intimidated by the word “writing consultant,” because I’m a student just like you. This is my third year studying Psychology at Concordia University. One day, I will apply my studies in the field of Social Work, Police Psychology, or perhaps as a behavioral analogist under the FBI. I’m not sure yet what God’s plan is. I dream about exploring the beaches, mountains, and cities of our crazy, diverse world. As you can tell, I like using commas and I’m a bit of a grammar freak. I also enjoy creative writing such as poetry and narratives. I have studied under Professor Schmidt, Professor Lee, Drs. Raghinaru, Francisco, Dawn, Schultz, Deen, and Flores. Don’t stress about your paper; I’m here to help. There is a writer inside of you that is clawing to come out!
Hi! My name is Elizabeth Dobbin. This is my fourth year at Concordia Irvine studying music performance in the areas of classical voice and viola. I love to write fiction, but I have experience in other styles of writing such as research papers and descriptive or argumentative essays. Some professors I have studied under include Professors Lee, Borst, Armstrong, and Van Voorhis. I would love to discuss your ideas and papers with you and help in your writing process in any way I can.
Hello fellow Concordians. My name is Katherine Dubke and I am a Humanities Major with an emphasis in Creative Writing. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me singing in the Concordia Choir or playing flute in the Wind Orchestra. When it comes to writing, I have enjoyed a wide range of assignments over my college years including poetry, movie scripts, and various formats for academic papers (CMS, MLA, and a little bit of APA). Over all of these experiences (and though this may seem cliché) I have learned the most about writing from my mistakes. Writing isn’t so much a formula as it is a process where you experiment to find the writing style that works best for you. Stop by and see me sometime. I would be happy to help you with the writing process!
Hello! My name is Michaela Mueller, and I'm a sophomore Accounting major
with a minor in Creative Writing. I love writing of all kinds, be it
fiction or research papers, and I'm so excited to work with students on
becoming better writers. I am a big fan of fun, colorful words and
grammar, and I promise to make the writing process more enjoyable than you
thought it could be! Outside of school, I enjoy playing basketball,
singing, and going shoe shopping (who doesn't?!). I've written for many
awesome professors here at Concordia, including: Drs. Bachman, Middendorf,
Malinson, Espinosa, Brown, and Raghinaru. I look forward to meeting you
and getting to know you as a fellow writer!
Hello folks! My name is Emily Olson and I am a senior here at Concordia, Irvine. I am a Psychology major, but I enjoy reading most anything and editing any papers my friends let me get my hands on. I have had the pleasure of studying under many excellent professors who have helped improve my writing skills including Schmidt, Norton, Borst, Armstrong, Lu, Flores and Van Voorhis. I have had experience in writing with MLA, APA, and Chicago Manual Style. Thanks to these great professors, I have found that my strengths include thesis formation, paper organization and grammatical corrections. Outside of writing, I like to go out with friends to new restaurants that serve unique cuisines, roller skate, watch movies, and sing loudly in the car with the music pumping and the windows down. I look forward to seeing your smiling faces in the Writing Center to help you tackle all of your writing worries. See you soon!
Hi! I’m Danika Schmid. I’m a sophomore history and political thought major
and plan to teach at the high school or college level. I’m familiar with
APA, CMS and MLA as I’ve taken communication, history, English, creative
writing and public speaking courses. I’ve studied under Professors
Armstrong, Bachman, Borst, Deen, Gavin, Hack, and Williams. When I’m not
engulfed in schoolwork, I love traveling and hiking, yet more realistically
catching up on sleep, eating Oreos and rereading Harry Potter for the
zillionth time. Writing can be an difficult process, but I look forward to
helping you with any questions you may have.
Hello there! My name is Gretchen Sheetz and I'm a music performance major. I've come to enjoy writing very much over the course of my academic studies. A good paper requires hard work and dedication, but the end result is extremely satisfying. As a senior, I am part of the class that first experienced the Core curriculum; I studied with Dr. van Voorhis, Dr. Armstrong, Dr. Norton, and Professor Borst, and many papers were involved! I'm also pursuing a creative writing minor and as such, have taken classes with Professor Gavin and Professor Schmidt. I would love to help you with whatever writing project you wish to tackle!
Hello! My name is Lauren Stevens and I am a junior Psychology major. I was a PAL last year and absolutely love engaging with people. I was recently initiated into the Honors Society of Omicron Delta Kappa, and this semester am taking on the challenge of starting a new Psychology and Behavioral Science club. In my spare time I love to read, run, play volleyball, listen to music like Taylor Swift, hang out with friends, and write poetry. I have had the pleasure of studying under and writing for Dr. Bachman, Professor Deen, Dr. Raghinaru, Dr. Francisco, Dr. Lu, and Dr. Flores, to name a few. Some of my strengths are strong thesis statements, good organization, appropriate grammar, and powerful conclusions. My hope for the people who visit the Writing Center is that they walk away feeling confident that a fabulous paper is not far out of reach. Come on in!
Hello! I’m Rebecca Rierson, a senior history student working on my secondary credential so that I can become a teacher. Outside of the Writing Center I also work as a Core Peer Tutor for history, and as a waitress serving awesome food. When I get some free time I love hanging out with friends, finding splendid places to eat, reading, and taking too many photos! I have had the pleasure of taking classes (and writing plenty of papers) with Dr. Armstrong, Dr. Francisco, Dr. Van Voorhis and Dr. Brown. I love building a thesis, creating an organized paper, and know how to follow the “golden rod sheets” for the history department’s style guide.
Meet the Online Staff
Hello! My name is Zach Borst and I am consultant with the online branch of the Writing Center. I am currently a PhD student at UC Riverside studying Greek, Latin, and English literature. I graduated from Concordia Irvine in 2012 with a BA in English and minors in history and classical languages. Last March my college sweetheart and I returned to Concordia for our wedding. I will be working with graduate, adult, and online students, and I am familiar with the citation styles of APA, MLA, and CMS. I look forward to working with you!
Hi! I’m Johanna Saleska, a graduate student at the University of Missouri, where I’m pursuing an M.A. in English with a focus in Rhetoric and Composition. I graduated from CUI in 2012 and have been missing it ever since! When I’m not reading or writing, thinking about reading or writing, or writing about reading or writing (yes, you can write about writing), I can be found perusing farmers’ markets, hiking forested trails, or sipping chai lattes whilst weeping over the latest episodes of Downton Abbey. Thanks to this newfangled invention called “the web,” I can help you with your papers all the way from mid-Missouri! I look forward to hearing from you!
Hello all! My name is Kristina Deusch, and I just graduated from
Concordia University Irvine with a Bachelor's degree in English and a minor
in Marketing. I worked with undergraduate students as a Core Peer Tutor and
a Writing Center Consultant during much of my time there. Now I want to
break into the world of publishing in the editorial field. My hobbies
include ringing handbells, eating summer strawberries, and collecting far
too many books than my shelves can hold. I have loved researching and
writing for OWL papers online, and look forward to tackling even more new
writing projects with you!
Hello, I’m Professor Pamela Wade. As an early alumnus of Christ College Irvine—and then later, Concordia University—I have been blessed with a successful career in both business and education, for which CUI well prepared me and for which, I am incredibly thankful. As such, I welcome this opportunity to work with you in the University’s OWL. An author, co-author, and editor-in-chief for more than thirty, award-winning business books and training programs, it’s been my privilege to be a requested speaker for national and international conferences. In my current consulting work, I appreciate collaboratively designing and implementing results-driven initiatives, with proven ROI. A few achievements include a 1996 Telly Award; a 2002 Training Program of the Year Award; a 20-year circulation for one of my books, available in three languages; and amazing clients ranging from Walt Disney to Genentech to the Vatican. My husband and I actively participate in the community and enjoy residing as “empty-nesters” in Orange County.
