CLEP & DANTES Tests
Earn College Credit with CLEP® and DSST®
The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a credit-by-examination program, sponsored by the College Board, which gives students the opportunity to earn college credit by earning qualifying scores on exams. CLEP exams are computer-based at Concordia University, Irvine.
CLEP exams also offer a low-cost method for earning college credit. At $80, each exam is a fraction of the tuition required for a similar college course (exams are funded for eligible military and civilian examinees; there is a $20 nonrefundable registration fee at Concordia University, Irvine). The 90-minute exams are offered in more than 33 subjects, ranging from U.S. History, Spanish and College Algebra. Students receive their scores upon completion of the exam (except for English Composition with Essay exam).
Students have the opportunity to prepare for these exams using the CLEP Official Study Guide, which helps students learn more about exams and decide which exams to take. It includes sample test questions for all exams and it provides test-taking tips and a list of study resources to help students prepare for the exams. Individual subject guides are also available online on the CLEP website.
Nearly 3,000 colleges and universities grant credit or advanced standing based on CLEP exam performance. Each college sets its own policy, so it is important to determine the specifics of an institution's policy, such as the exams for which they grant credit and how many credits they grant. However, it is not necessary to be enrolled in college in order to take a CLEP test.
The nationally recognized DSST Program (DANTES Subject Standardized Tests) allows you to receive college credits for learning acquired outside the traditional classroom. DSSTs offer students a cost-effective, time-saving way to use their knowledge acquired outside of the classroom to accomplish their educational goals.
Currently, there are almost 2,000 colleges and universities that recognize the DSST program and award college credit for passing scores. There are over 38 test titles in the areas of Social Science, Business, Mathematics, Applied Technology, Humanities, and Physical Science. The test fee is $80 per exam (plus a $20 nonrefundable registration fee), which will save money on tuition and book costs.
