Music Major: 54 Units

The Music Major prepares students for personal enrichment as well as for careers in music education, church music, performance, and academic pursuits such as music history, theory, composition, music and business, music therapy.
The Music Major with a music education emphasis prepares students to meet requirements for the California single-subject teaching credential in music. Students can also be certified for a call to teach in Lutheran schools. Teacher education candidates complete addition work and make a separate application in the School of Education.
The Music Major with a church music emphasis can be part of the Director of Parish Music program leading to certification as a called church worker in the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. Director of Parish Music students complete additional course work and make separate application in Christ College.
The Music Major with a liberal arts emphasis can be customized to prepare students for specific careers and graduate studies in performance, theory, history, ethnomusicology, studio teaching music therapy, music and business, recording and commercial music, etc.

Applied Music: By graduation, the student must meet the established advanced competency in piano organ, voice or another instrument namely, level 401. If performing a senior recital, Level 401 must be completed before the semester of the recital. The student must also meet the basic competency in piano (eligibility for Level 202) and voice (Level 100/101). Since this generally takes more than five credits to accomplish, the student should take at least one instrument each term.

Ensemble (four rehearsals per week): 4 Four credits are counted toward graduation, but each music major is expected to participate in at least one department ensemble each term of attendance, including at least one full year of an advanced ensemble during the junior or senior year. Additional credits can be petitioned against the general electives as described in the university catalog.
