Our Fragile Earth

Born in Jerusalem, a land that is spiritual and passionate, searing and volatile - these words describe the artist as well as her works. Rhea, over the last twenty-seven years, has produced a body of work that celebrates with antiquity the everlasting human spirit, which survives the brutality and insanity of war, the aridity and harshness of human nature as it endures. Rhea utilizes a variety of media—oils, sand, water, treated paper, canvas and wood—which she layers, smooths and sculpts to create abstract impressions which demand tactile as well as visual interplay. Her works are perceived as the topography of intimate landscapes, as well as the mapping of emotions and sensations devoid of familiar forms. The paintings are a personal diary of the artist as she chronicles the events that have had an impact on humanity and nature.
These works combine to express the feelings of introspection, conflict, human emotion, and the effects of malicious wielding of power and greed on humanity. Rhea's work has been exhibited in Israel, Europe, Australia, New York and Los Angeles. She now resides in California with her husband of 48 years.

My entire personal history from the last six years is embedded into the brushstrokes of these paintings. I left nothing out and held nothing back. The struggle and reward of this form of recklessness is also recorded onto the surface. Now that I am turned inside out, I am free to know nothing and everything at the same time. When I paint I just ask questions and listen.

This exhibition will highlight work that was produced during the fall semester of 2009 in the following art courses: children’s art, design, digital illustration, digital image manipulation, drawing, elements of art, graphic design, and painting. Student artwork is also on display throughout the academic year in the Library Arts Building at CUI.

Artists' lecture and reception on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. in the CU Center.
Artists Kathy Jones, Stephanie Cunningham and Betty Haight are oil painters who have discovered the joy of collaborative art. Although they each have individual bodies of work, the pieces in this exhibit primarily focus on work they have done together in various combinations.
“Collaborative work gives us the joy of incorporating the trust developed through friendship into visual works of art. As a result of the push-pull, discussion and joint struggle we are able to transcend our individual limitations and rise to a level we would not have discovered on our own.”
The exhibition will include paintings in which the artists have worked on the same canvas, paintings in which the artists have joined together separately worked canvases and jointly worked sculpture.

This exhibition will feature new work by the faculty in the art department at Concordia University Irvine. Artistic styles from abstract to representational celebrate a group of committed and talented artists. The annual exhibition highlights that Concordia's art faculty are mentors who are actively engaged in their disciplines.

I am basically a landscape artist, with a passion for plein air (on location) watercolor painting. Although design, color, texture, surfaces, several collage techniques and explorations into various nonobjective directions are important to me, after forty-five years of painting, I am most deeply committed to content—how to communicate my reactions and feelings about my natural environment to viewers. My goal is not replication of scenes and sites, but it is concerned with interpretation and visual communication that expresses my sensitivity and response to God's wonder-filled natural creation, and to the cultural and architectural.
