CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY IRVINE TO PRESENT 19th ANNUAL MASTERWORKS CONCERT APRIL 18-19

Concert Features Three French Works Directed by Dr. Michael Busch and Performed by Full Orchestra and Three Choral Ensembles

WHO: Concordia University Irvine invites local editors, reporters, music enthusiasts and community members to a performance of three classic pieces by French composers as part of its 19th annual MasterWorks Series.

WHAT: More than 97 voices and a full orchestra will perform three works: “The Requiem” by Maurice Duruflé, “The Gloria” by Francis Poulenc, and “Psalm 150” by César Franck. Highlights include:

·        Conductor Dr. Michael Busch will direct The Concordia Choir, Master Chorale, and the Masterworks Orchestra in each of the pieces which showcase noted French composers of the 19th and 21st centuries.

·        Featured soloist Jeralyn Glass is an internationally celebrated artist on the opera and concert stages of the world. She is known as a “Mozart singer of the first order” for her performances in the world’s leading opera houses.

·        Published in 1947, “The Requiem” is an impressionist work incorporating Gregorian chant melodies and features two vocal soloists in a timeless telling of faith and prayer.

·        “The Gloria” brings lively, joyful melodies featuring a sweeping soprano solo by Glass. The piece – one of Poulenc’s most celebrated works – was first performed in 1961 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. A recording of the piece by the Robert Shaw Chorale won a GrammyAward for “Best Chorale Performance.”

·        The final piece in the trio, “Psalm 150” is a short, dramatic of the Biblical text composed for voices and orchestra and is the oldest of the three works, having been composed in 1883.

·        The concert will be in the Concordia University Center, a 500-seat semi-circular auditorium, with exceptional acoustics and sight lines.

“The MasterWorks Concert Series at Concordia University Irvine is revered tradition that helps sustain classic musical compositions in our culture by celebrating these pieces with our students, faculty and the community,” said Dr. Michael Busch, director of choral activities at Concordia University. “The three selections by French composers chosen for the 19th annual MasterWorks series offer unique orchestrations, tempos and melodies, united through the common thread of celebrating and honoring God through music.”
