IRVINE, Calif. (July 7, 2014) – Concordia University Irvine (CUI) recently announced its support of the Yellow Ribbon Program, an initiative established by the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. The Program helps fund expenses that exceed tuition and fees payable under the G.I. Bill.
U.S. colleges and universities voluntarily opt to partner with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to contribute up to 50 percent of the expenses not currently covered under the G.I. Bill. Veterans within the program benefit when a university participates, as the VA then matches the amount given per program student. CUI will contribute the full 50 percent to qualifying students for the 2014-2015 academic year.
The original G.I. Bill – which celebrated its 70th anniversary this month – was established as law in 1944 to support veterans returning from World War II, and has been modified and enhanced over time to meet modern needs. At CUI, the addition of the Yellow Ribbon Program adds to the university’s portfolio of resources available to help veterans achieve their educational objectives.
“CUI is committed to helping service members, veterans and their families pursue their academic, professional and vocational goals,” said Dr. Kurt Krueger, president of Concordia University Irvine. “We are proud to provide additional tuition support for veterans through the Yellow Ribbon Program, giving them access to instruction and experiences that will help them determine their calling in life and equip them to build a strong future.”
In addition to joining Yellow Ribbon Program, CUI has elected to participate in the Principles of Excellence initiative, a program launch under executive order in 2012 to ensure that student veterans, service members, and family members are adequately supported and protected while using Federal education benefits. CUI has agreed to uphold these principles which include providing educational plans for all military and veteran education beneficiaries, ending fraudulent and aggressive recruiting techniques and misrepresentations and accommodating service members and reservists who are absent due to service requirements.
Current or prospective students who qualify for assistance through the Yellow Ribbon Program are encouraged to contact to Concordia University Veterans Services Office at (949)-214-3124. Additional information is also available at www.cui.edu/studentlife/veterans.
